History of Dead Sea salt
The Dead Sea is the deepest lake in the world. It lies between Israel and Jordan and is bordered by the Jordan Valley in the north and Wadi Araba in the south. The lake lies in a valley 429 metres below sea level, making the Dead Sea coast the lowest land area on earth. With an average daily temperature of 40 degrees, there is virtually no precipitation and the air is clear and free of smog and pollutants.
The Dead Sea is called dead because of its high salt content, which prevents organisms living in the water from surviving. This high salt content makes bathing in the Dead Sea a beneficial activity for people with skin problems. The salt water has a therapeutic effect on the skin, hair and nails. The Dead Sea continues to sink every year, there is less and less water in the Dead Sea. Large areas remain that are almost entirely salty. This salt is practically cut out and then traded as bath salts.
This Dead Sea salt is a hygroscopic product.
The processing of Dead Sea salt
In its pure form, Dead Sea salt is not suitable for consumption. The high concentration of minerals in the salt, including magnesium, gives it a bitter taste.
Table salt is extracted in a different way, and in the right way, than in other sea salt plants. A special technique is used to obtain table salt. The water of the Dead Sea is led to evaporation basins. Sodium chloride is the heaviest of all salts and settles first at the bottom of the saltworks. The "remaining" water is then drained off and new water is brought in. This process is repeated over and over again. This results in a salt that contains less magnesium, potassium and other minerals typical of the Dead Sea - but much more sodium chloride (NaCl), i.e. kitchen salt.
The salt is valued by chefs in many of the world's leading kitchens.
