Genmaicha tea: Japanese rice tea!

A tea mix of Sencha and roasted brown rice is called Genmaicha tea in Japan. Genmai means "brown rice" and cha means "tea". Because sometimes a grain of rice puffs during the roasting process, it seems as if popcorn is floating in your tea. Therefore, the tea is sometimes called popcorn tea.

Where Genmaicha comes from.

Genmaicha is called popcorn tea because of the puffed brown rice, but it also has another name. It was also traditionally called 'tea of the people'. In the past, rice was used as a 'filler' to make green tea affordable for the common people.

It was also, because of the rice, the appropriate drink for religious people who were on a fast where there were long periods between one meal and the next.

Today, tea is drunk in all walks of life. Not surprising, because it is also simply delicious!

Genmaicha tea healthy?

Yes, the green tea and brown rice in Genmaicha organic are grown and processed organically and thus contain no pesticides. The Sencha contains many antioxidants and the brown rice contains carbohydrates with a low glycaemic index.

Sencha vs Genmaicha

Sencha tea typically tastes like green tea with that distinctive umami flavour. One of the ingredients in Genmaicha is of course Sencha. So how different does the tea with Genmaicha rice taste?

Thanks to the sugar and starch in the rice, Genmaicha also has a warm, full and nutty taste. It is easy to drink and is said to soothe the stomach. It is mainly the unexploded rice grains that provide the taste and aroma.

A glass of Genmaicha tea also contains less caffeine than an ordinary glass of Sencha tea.

Is Genmaicha the same as Chinese rice tea?

No, there is no such thing as Chinese rice tea. However, there is a Korean green rice tea (hyeonmi-nokcha) which is similar to the Japanese Genmaicha.

Delicious green tea
Although I'm not much of a green tea lover, I find the combination with rice quite enjoyable; I will especially drink this in the winter.
