Mustard Seed Black Ground Organic
Origin Mustard seed
Mustard seed black (Brassica nigra) comes from the mustard plant, which is an annual, herbaceous plant in the cruciferous family. The mustard plant is specially cultivated for its mustard seeds, which are used as a spice. There are different types of mustard plants, with different colours of mustard seeds. There are yellow mustard seeds, white mustard seeds, brown mustard seeds and black mustard seeds.
Black mustard seed has its origins in the Mediterranean region, where the species has reportedly been cultivated for thousands of years. Black mustard is very similar to white mustard (Sinapis alba), the difference being that black mustard has smaller seeds and a spicier taste.
Characteristics of Black Mustard Seed
Mustard plants grow from June through September. The black mustard plant grows to approximately 60-120 cm in height. The inflorescence is a cluster of yellow flowers, which become longer as they mature. In the wild the plant grows in open, nutrient-rich and moist places along rivers and on verges in temperate regions of Europe.
Black mustard seed also has some healthy properties, for example it aids digestion. In addition, black mustard seeds contain essential oils, which are good for blood flow in the body and make the skin temperature rise. Mustard has a sharp taste and is also a delicious seasoning, this ensures that less salt is needed in a dish.
Applications Black Mustard Seed
The spice mustard is made from the seeds of the mustard plant, where the seed skins are removed or not. The seeds vary in colour from dark brown to black. Black mustard seed has an aromatic and sharp nutty flavour. Mustard seed can be added to stews, in exotic sauces, and in Indian dishes such as chutneys and curries.
The popularity of black mustard has declined for brown mustard seed (Brassica juncea) since the 1950s, as varieties of this brown mustard seed proved better suited to mechanical harvesting.
