Several types of sweeteners in our range

Wholesale sweeteners

The use of sweeteners has increased significantly worldwide. The exponential growth of the intake of sugar is mainly in the last decades. The problem of a (too) large intake of sugar is that it can lead to obesity and other health problems.

In addition to that, sugar is used in more and more products, so that you can unconsciously ingest a lot of it even if you avoid sweets and cakes. Natural sweeteners are an alternative.

Alternative sweeteners

In part due to the negative health effects of excessive sugar intake, there is a growing demand for alternative sweeteners. It is mainly natural sweetener with a low GI (Glycemic Index).

There are also people who consciously choose a low sugar diet. Vehgro is a wholesaler of organic products that various sugar-free products and alternative sweetener in the range has included.

What exactly is the Glycemic Index?

The Glycemic Index (GI) is a measure used to determine the effect that carbohydrates (including sugars) have on blood glucose levels.

Carbohydrates with a high GI are quickly broken down by the digestive system and release their glucose quickly into the bloodstream. These carbohydrates have a high Glycemic value. Carbohydrates that are broken down slowly, on the other hand, have a low value in the Glycemic Index.

Role of sugars

Sugars have a high Glycemic value. In our organic wholesale we therefore have enough sweeteners that are a healthier alternative. What about the sweetener Stevia? Did you know that it has a Glycemic Index of 0? A high GI equals a value of 70 or higher. A low GI is below 55. Stevia has the best possible value.

Corn sugar - Canadian sweetness

Maple in English is 'Maple'. The Maple Leave proudly adorns the Canadian flag: maple sugar and syrup is a typical Canadian speciality. The sugars comes from the juice in the sugar maple tree. In the spring, small holes are made in these trees to tap the juice. The juice is then turned into maple syrup. This takes place through crystallisation and a complex process of evaporation. Did you know that maple sugar is scarce?

Production per tree

Only about 2 to 3 kilograms of sugar can be produced from one tree per year. This makes this sweetener relatively scarce. Maple sugar tastes a bit like caramel with a hint of liquorice. It is often used on pancakes, cakes, in tea and as a coating on flambéed desserts. If you have maple sugar in your home, you have an absolute delicacy.

Agricultural premium honey

The premium honey of Vehgro is a product with an organic certificate and of the highest quality. This product is produced with care for people, animals and the environment. It is the aim of Vehgro to only offer products of the highest quality, coming from regions all over the world.

Wherever the product comes from: the final check takes place in Europe and the product - as well as our sweeteners - will be packed and labelled.

The sweetener Erythritol

Are you familiar with the sweetener Erythritol? This sweetener has a sweetening power which 0,6-0,8 times that of ordinary sugar. The sweetener is of natural origin and is found in fruits, cheese, soy sauce, wine and mushrooms.

The special thing about Erythritol is that it is the only polyol with no calorie value. Erythritol is almost completely absorbed in the large intestine and then excreted through the urine. Is also often used in chewing gum.

Erythritol and food safety

In 1999 the sweetener Erythritol was approved by a Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of JECFA - a combination of forces of WHO and FAO. The Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) decided in 2003 that Erythritol is safe to use for humans. WCMV is the forerunner of EFSA, which confirmed the WCMV's research in 2015. So Erythritol is absolutely safe to use.

How to use Erythritol?

You will find the sweetener in chewing gum, candy, biscuits, desserts, carbonated soft drinks and jams. One of the reasons for this is that the sweetener dissolves well in water. It is often combined with other sweeteners to extend the shelf life of products, particularly pastries. It can also help to mask unpleasant tastes - sour, bitter - when combined with other sweeteners.

Purchase Erythritol

Buy Erythritol? It is a good alternative to sugar. An important advantage is that this sweetener has a Glycemic Index of around 0-1, comparable to Stevia. Much better than sugar.

The sweetener Stevia

Stevia has a number of remarkable properties. For example, it has no calories and is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. The Glycemic Index of Stevia is, as mentioned, 0. Stevia comes from the Stevia plant, a plant that has been used as a sweetener in South America for centuries. To extract the sweetener from the plant, the leaves are soaked in water.

Soaking the solution

From the soaked leaves an solution is produced. This solution is purified and then dried. What remains are the crystals of Steviol Glycoside. A disadvantage of Stevia is that the aftertaste is on the bitter side. This decreases when Stevia is mixed with other sweeteners, such as Erythritol, which is described above.

The substance Steviolglycosides is not absorbed by the human body until the body has converted into Steviol.

Steviol glycosides are safe

In 2008 the JECFA was responsible for assessing the substance Steviolglycosides. It was assessed as safe. Two years later, the opinion of EFSA (European Food Safety Authority): safe.

Well it was indicated that the maximum amount of Stevia in food had to be carefully determined to avoid the risk that the ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake: prescribed dose) could be exceeded.

Dental health: Steviolglycosides vs. sugars

An important advantage of Steviolglycosides compared to "normal" sugars is that there appear to be no adverse effects on the teeth by ingestion. The substance also has no effect on blood sugar/insulin levels. Stevia can also be used by diabetics.

Coconut blossom sugar: what is that?

Buy coconut blossom sugar? It is also called coconut sugar or coconut palm sugar. This natural sugar is extracted from the coconut blossom. It is an unrefined form of sugar, with good nutrients (vitamins B, iron, potassium, zinc, magnesium) and a limited Glycemic Index (around 30-35).

Coconut blossom sugar is called the "healthiest" form of sugar and there is something to be said for that. In addition to that, the taste is very nice.
