Meet the most popular Japanese green tea

Sencha tea is designated by more than 80% of tea drinkers in Japan as their most popular tea. Sencha tea is therefore almost always served when tea needs to be drunk. The leaves of our organic Sencha tea come (like all green teas) from the camellia sinensis plant. Our tea is grown on fertile volcanic soil in Kagoshima, a province in the south of Japan.

This soil, fresh spring water from the high altitude tea gardens and the careful cultivation of the tea leaves are the basis for the full Umami flavour of our Sencha green tea. The dark green leaves are finely rolled and dried. You will draw from them a green-yellow tea with an intense aroma.

What is Sencha?

As mentioned, Sencha tea is made from the camellia sinensis. But also matcha, genmaicha, kukicha, bancha and many other green teas are all made from the same plant. What makes each tea unique, however, are the differences in cultivation, harvesting, processing and the way it is used by the end user.

Green Sencha tea is protected from sunlight

For Sencha tea, the tea plants are covered with a net that blocks out sunlight a few days before harvesting. Due to the lack of sunlight, the leaves become thinner, softer and more amino acids and chlorophyll grow in the leaf, colouring it a deep green.

Sencha green tea is harvested within fixed periods

Japanese Sencha Tea is harvested early in the season from May to June.
Only the best leaves are used.

Processing into Sencha tea

The harvested leaves are steamed. This encloses all nutrients in the leaf and prevents oxidation. The steamed leaves are then rolled and laid out to dry. The dried leaf is Japanese Sencha tea.

Is Sencha Tea healthy?

Sencha tea is full of nutrients that are good for the human body.

Polyphenols

Polyphenols are natural antioxidants. Sencha green tea contains many polyphenols such as tannin and epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG).

Caffeine

Sencha tea contains a lot of caffeine. At least four times more than in coffee. However, a glass of Sencha tea will not make you hyper. Sencha tea also contains a lot of tannins. The tannins ensure that the caffeine is absorbed more slowly in your body. This ensures a longer lasting and more even stimulation for your body. Very different from the caffeine kick of coffee.

Vitamins

Sencha green tea contains various vitamins. It is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin E.

All this makes Sencha tea healthy!

How to prepare Sencha tea?

  1. Pour a teaspoon of Sencha tea into a teacup.
  2. Pour water of about 80 - 90 degrees Celsius over it.
  3. Let the tea brew for a while (about 2 to 5 minutes).
  4. The ideal drinking temperature for Sencha tea is around 60 degrees Celsius.
That may be much lower than what you are used to, but at this temperature the tea comes into its own. The warmer you brew the tea, the stronger the taste. But Sencha tea should taste soft, which is why you drink the infused tea on water of a lower starting temperature (no boiling water).

Great green tea. And organic!
I have been using the matcha from Holyflavours for a while now. When I saw that they also had new Japanese teas, I immediately bought this Sencha to try it out. This is a slightly more 'normal' green tea.

It is full of flavor yet smooth. I really like it!
