Where does Shea butter originate from?

Shea Butter originates in Africa and is extracted from the nuts of the Shea Tree, also known as Karité Tree. The tree is part of the natural vegetation of a 300 km wide strip that runs from Mali through Burkina Faso to Ghana, Togo and Benin. Only in this area and nowhere else in the world do the Shea trees grow in different varieties. They are up to 15 meters high trees with plum-like fruits, whose kernels contain up to 50% fat.

Healthy properties of Shea Butter

Shea Butter has an ivory colour and a smoky, nutty smell. The butter contains a high content of vitamins A, E and F and is great for moisturising the skin, improving circulation and promoting skin elasticity. In Africa Shea Butter has been used for centuries for the daily care of skin and hair.

Applications of Shea Butter

Shea Butter is widely found in commercial creams, lotions and soaps, but the effect of Shea Butter in these products is almost negligible, because almost always machine refined Shea Butter is used as an ingredient. Shea Butter that has been processed has lost its special characteristics during the processing. It is therefore best to use 100% natural, unrefined Shea Butter to enjoy all its benefits. The scientific name for Shea Butter is Butyrospermum parkii.
