What is organic Shoyu Powder?

Soy sauce: an introduction

Soy sauce is a common seasoning in Oriental cuisine and has several varieties. It is made from fermented , wheat, water and salt. Soy sauce adds umami, a savoury flavour, to dishes and is used as a dipping sauce, marinade or flavour enhancer.

Wheat makes soy sauce sweeter

The three best-known types of soy sauce are shoyu, tamari and ketjap. Although they are all soybean-based, each has its own unique flavour profile and uses.
The addition of wheat makes soy sauce sweeter.

Tamari

is a Japanese soy sauce with a rich, dark flavour. It contains little to no wheat and has an intense umami flavour. It is often used as a dipping sauce, seasoning in wok dishes and as a gluten-free alternative to regular soy sauce.

Ketjap manis & ketjap asin

Traditional Ketjap is an Indonesian soy sauce that is thicker than the Japanese varieties. It is made from fermented soybeans, wheat, sugar and sometimes other flavourings. There are two common variants: ketjap manis, a sweet variant, and ketjap asin, a salty variant. Ketjap is widely used as a marinade and salty seasoning in dishes and as a dipping sauce.

Shoyu

Shoyu is a mild Japanese soy sauce and is considered the most common soy sauce in Japanese cuisine. It is made from a mixture of soybeans and wheat, which is then fermented with a unique Japanese mould culture called koji. Shoyu has a balanced flavour of salt and umami, with a subtle sweetness.

It is often used as a dipping sauce, table condiment or as a seasoning in soups, stews and other dishes. Shoyu comes in different grades, such as light shoyu (usukuchi) and dark shoyu (koikuchi), which vary in flavour and colour.

Benefits of Shoyu Powder

Organic Shoyu powder offers several advantages over traditional liquid sauce. The powder is convenient and easy to use, especially for travelling, camping or as a space-saving option in the kitchen. It has a longer shelf life and is less prone to spoilage, making it ideal for long-term storage. The powder is also handy for measuring precise quantities in recipes if you are going Asian cooking.

Organic Origin

Our organic Shoyu powder comes from carefully selected organic ingredients. The soybeans and wheat used to make this powder are grown using organic farming methods. Easy to measure
I like to use Shoyu powder while cooking. Much easier to measure the needed weight than sauce!
