Origin and Characteristics

Flaxseed, derived from the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum), has a rich history that dates back to ancient times, where it was valued for both its fibers and its seeds. The flax plant thrives best in cooler climates and can be found in many parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, and North America. The Netherlands is one of the countries where flax is successfully cultivated.

Nutrients in Flaxseed

Is flaxseed healthy? Yes, it is rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. Fiber is an important part of our diet, containing 34 grams of fiber per 100 grams. In addition to fiber, it also contains a large amount of omega-3 fatty acids in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

The broken or ground version is also a source of plant-based proteins and various minerals, including magnesium, potassium, and zinc. This composition makes it a nutritious addition.

Flaxseed in 4 Forms

Flaxseed is a versatile superfood with a neutral flavor. Due to this subtle taste and the nutritional benefits, we offer flaxseed in four different forms, each with unique properties and specific applications:

  • Whole Flaxseed is ideal for adding texture to baked goods or in bread. Although whole flaxseed is hardly digested if not chewed, it retains its full nutritional value when thoroughly chewed or pre-broken.

  • Broken Flaxseed: The seeds are lightly broken to make the nutrients more accessible to the intestines. This broken form is perfect for mixing into various baked goods and bread; add a few grams of flaxseed to your diet for a fiber-rich addition without altering the flavor of your dish.

  • Ground Flaxseed: Completely ground into a fine powder, which facilitates the absorption of nutrients by the body. Ground seeds can be added to soups, sauces, or used in baking recipes, providing your dishes with a nutritious boost.

  • Flaxseed Protein Powder: A concentrated source of proteins and fibers, ideal for enriching protein shakes or sports drinks. This powder can also be used as a protein booster in baking recipes without affecting the original flavors of your dishes.

Each form of flaxseed brings its own benefits, giving you versatility in how you incorporate these nutritious seeds into your diet.

Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil can also be made from flaxseed. This oil contains a lot of omega-3 fatty acids and is therefore suitable as a salad dressing, but also as an ingredient in skincare.

Why Choose Organic?

Organic (broken) flaxseed is unprocessed and is grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers, which means the end product is purer and free from potentially harmful substances. This makes these products not only a healthier choice but also supports sustainable agricultural practices that maintain soil quality and promote biodiversity.

Moreover, organic flaxseed is known for its high quality. Due to the strict standards that organic products must meet, you can be sure that you are consuming a product of the highest quality. Unprocessed and pure, it retains all the natural nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, fibers, and minerals, that contribute to a healthy diet.

Cyanide in Flaxseed

Since January 1, 2023, new legislation in the Netherlands has been introduced regarding the raw consumption of flaxseed. This regulation was implemented due to the presence of hydrogen cyanide, also known as cyanide. In raw form and in high doses, cyanide can be harmful to health. Cyanide dissolves in water, and its boiling point is just above room temperature.

By heating the flaxseed through cooking or baking, the concentration of cyanide decreases, and no negative health effects are expected.
